The boys got some cool science experiment kits from my mom for Christmas and we had not had the opportunity to do them yet. We decided to bring them out the other day and do something fun, while avoiding the heat outside!
The first kit is this Disgusting Science one. You basically make your own petri dishes and then collect various samples and watch the germs grow in the agar! Unfortunately, we could never get the agar to set. After several attempts we FINALLY had success. We swiped the q-tip in between Ethan's toes for his petri dish, and Ashton decided to swipe his armpit. (Remember, the title of the kit...Disgusting...the instructions say to swipe somewhere on your body!)
We put the dishes in the hot water closet (it said to place it somewhere dark and dry) but unfortunately, it must get very hot in there too, because when we went to look at the dishes they had all turned back into their watery state. We'll have to do it again....
Next we decided to do a volcano. This experiment took patience on the boys part since you have to make the volcano one day, allow it 24 hours to sit before actually blowing it up! :)

The next day, we went out to the carport with our volcano form. You are to fill it up with club soda and then insert these red pellets. The pellets are to react with the club soda, causing the volcanic "explosion" out of the top.
It didn't quite "explode" as the boys were thinking, but it was cool nonetheless!

Tiff...this is my favorite experiment. You can make the volcano "explode" using baking soda, vinegar, and red food coloring. The chemical reaction of the baking soda and vinegar cause the "eruption". So much fun!
